The Grantham Research Institute is to lead one of the five research consortia that form the Future Climate for Africa

FCFA is a five-year programme that supports research to better understand climate variability and change across sub-Saharan Africa. It will focus on advancing knowledge, understanding and prediction of African climate change on 5 to 40 year timescales.<\/p>\n

The project aims to support better integration of science and social science insights into longer-term decision making. By researching applied decision problems, the work should lead to improved climate risk management and the protection of lives and livelihoods.<\/p>\n

The Grantham Research Institute, together with 12 other partner institutions based in the UK and in central and southern African countries, form the Uncertainty reduction in Models For Understanding development Applications<\/em> (UMFULA) consortium. ‘Umfula’ translates as ‘river’ in the Zulu language.<\/p>\n

The research team will work closely with development partners in the water, agriculture and energy sectors in the Rufiji river basin in Tanzania, as well as those involved at the sub-national level in southern Malawi.<\/p>\n
