While the full extent of the impacts of deep-sea mining on this highly biodiverse environment is still uncertain, the following key impact drivers are already known:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Habitat removal<\/strong>: Probably the most obvious environmental impact of deep-sea mining is the removal of the nodules themselves, which likely changes the sediment&rsquo;s geochemistry and causes many organisms to lose their habitat. In the ocean environment sound travels faster than through air and across huge distances, providing an effective communication medium for ocean inhabitants, which are highly sensitive to acoustic changes. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fmars.2023.1095930\/full#:~:text=3-,Anthropogenic%20noise%20from%20deep%20seabed%20mining,-One%20of%20the\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Noise&#65279;<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;from these sources and activity can thus interfere with communication between marine mammals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Light pollution<\/strong>: Only about 1% of sunlight reaches ocean depths of 200 metres. Consequently, many organisms are adapted to the darkness and have reduced visual capacity. These pressures can lead to diminished environmental and social protection, which is of particular concern given the lack of visibility and accessibility in the deep-sea environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the current status of deep-sea mining and its governance?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Most deep-sea mining is expected to take place in international waters, i.e. beyond the territorial waters of any country, where governance and enforcement of regulation&nbsp;<a class=\"link link--external\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-023-00757-z#:~:text=In%20the%20Pacific,ocean%2C%20including%20Antarctica.\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\">depend on international agreements&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a>&nbsp;&ndash; and are currently lacking when it comes to deep-sea mining.
