Leading organisations including the International Energy Agency, International Renewable Energy Agency, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and Bloomberg New Energy Finance have all produced <a class=\"link link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ief.org\/_resources\/files\/reports\/outlook-comparison-report.pdf\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">long-term energy outlooks&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a> that rely on a rapid expansion of CCUS in order to limit global temperature rise to 1.5&deg;C. In the UK, the <a class=\"link link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theccc.org.uk\/publication\/sixth-carbon-budget\/\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">different scenarios&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a> produced by the Climate Change Committee (CCC) for reducing UK emissions to net zero by 2050 include at least 70 million tons of CO<sub>2<\/sub> (MtCO<sub>2<\/sub>) being captured annually by that year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CCUS could be an important area of focus if the UK is to capture economic growth opportunities during its transition to net zero emissions, given its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lse.ac.uk\/granthaminstitute\/publication\/seizing-sustainable-growth-opportunities-from-carbon-capture-usage-and-storage-in-the-uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">comparative advantages<\/a> in the production and further innovation of CCUS products and technologies. CCUS is also shown to generate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lse.ac.uk\/granthaminstitute\/publication\/growing-clean-identifying-and-investing-in-sustainable-growth-opportunities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">above-average returns<\/a> to public investments in innovation among a set of clean and emerging technology areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, there are no commercial applications of CCUS in the UK, but the Government has a target to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/net-zero-strategy\">capture and store 20&ndash;30 MtCO<sub>2<\/sub><\/a> (including removals) per year by 2030 and <a class=\"link link--external\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/media\/6594718a579941000d35a7bf\/carbon-capture-usage-and-storage-vision-to-establish-a-competitive-market.pdf\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\">envisions&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a> building a competitive, self-sustaining CCUS market, <a class=\"link link--external\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/carbon-capture-usage-and-storage-net-zero-investment-roadmap\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\">working closely with industry&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a>. In 2019 the House of Commons Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee described CCUS policy in the UK as having had a <a class=\"link link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/publications.parliament.uk\/pa\/cm201719\/cmselect\/cmbeis\/1094\/1094.pdf\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">&rdquo;turbulent&rdquo;&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a> history, as illustrated by the cancellations in 2011 and 2015 of two major funding competitions at a late stage.
