Currently, species are disappearing 10 to 1,000 times faster than the normal &lsquo;background&rsquo; rate of extinction. All this suggests that we have entered the <a class=\"link link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/what-is-a-mass-extinction-and-are-we-in-one-now-122535\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">&lsquo;sixth mass extinction event&rsquo;&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a> &ndash; the first in Earth&rsquo;s history to be driven primarily by human activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Extinctions are always preceded by declining populations and contractions in a species&rsquo; range. The World Wide Fund for Nature&rsquo;s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwf.org.uk\/our-reports\/living-planet-report-2022\"> <em>Living Planet Report 2022<\/em><\/a> documents a 69% average loss in the abundance of mammal, bird, reptile, fish and amphibian species since 1970. The populations of vertebrates living in freshwater ecosystems have declined even more, by 83% on average over the same period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trends in plants, fungi, and invertebrates such as insects (which make up over three-quarters of all animal species) <a class=\"link link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/ipbes.net\/news\/Media-Release-Global-Assessment\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">are not as well known&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a>, but severe declines have been documented in some places. For example, in Germany, around 70% of plant species have declined since 1960s, while the weight of flying insects in protected has declined on average <a class=\"link link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0185809\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">by more than 75% in less than three decades&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of the species losses seen in recent decades have been concentrated in low- and middle-income countries in the Global South, especially in Latin America. Recent losses in the Northern hemisphere have been less severe, but only because of the large declines in wildlife and natural ecosystems that have already taken place. The UK, for example, which experienced widespread destruction of habitats between the 17th and 19th centuries, is <a class=\"link link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhm.ac.uk\/our-science\/data\/biodiversity-indicators\/biodiversity-intactness-index-data?future-scenario=ssp2_rcp4p5_message_globiom&amp;georegion=001.019.021.USA&amp;min-year=1970&amp;max-year=2050&amp;georegion-compare=null&amp;future-scenario-compare=null&amp;show-uncertainty=true&amp;min-biigraph-y-axis=0&amp;max-biigraph-y-axis=100&amp;min-factorgraph-y-axis=0&amp;max-factorgraph-y-axis=100&amp;underlying-factor=crp\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">the most biodiversity-depleted country in the world&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is driving the biodiversity crisis?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Direct and underlying drivers<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rapid industrialisation over the past two centuries has led to a significant increase in some of nature&rsquo;s contributions to people, notably in food, fibre and fuel. However, this has come <a class=\"link link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/ipbes.net\/global-assessment\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">at the expense of nature&rsquo;s other contributions&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a>, in particular ecosystems&rsquo; regulating functions such as pollination, flood control and climate regulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the recent <a class=\"link link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/ipbes.net\/the-values-assessment\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Values Assessment&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a> report by the International Panel for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), the underlying causes of the biodiversity crisis are strongly linked to a narrow focus on the materialistic values of nature in business and politics. This favours short-term profit and individual material gain over humanity&rsquo;s other values for nature, including relationships with the natural world based on respect, reciprocity and sacredness, which are common to many indigenous cultures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Habitat loss, degradation, fragmentation<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, <a class=\"link link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbd.int\/gbo\/gbo5\/publication\/gbo-5-en.pdf\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">biodiversity loss stems mainly from the loss&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a>, degradation and fragmentation of habitats. This is principally caused by the increasing encroachment of industrial activities and farming, fuelled by demand from <a class=\"link link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/ipbes.net\/assessment-reports\/ldr\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">high-consumption lifestyles&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a> in wealthy countries and rising consumption in low- and middle-income countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To date, <a class=\"link link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/ipbes.net\/global-assessment\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">75% of ice-free land and 63% of oceans have already been transformed&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a> by humans in some way. Wetlands have suffered particularly extensive losses, with <a class=\"link link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/ipbes.net\/global-assessment\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">85% of &#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a>these habitats globally being destroyed by human activity. Tropical rainforests are another biome particularly badly affected by habitat destruction. For example, due to deforestation the <a class=\"link link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/news\/feature\/2019\/05\/22\/why-the-amazons-biodiversity-is-critical-for-the-globe\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Amazon Rainforest&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a> &ndash; the largest and most biodiverse rainforest on the planet &ndash; is hurtling towards <a class=\"link link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.aba2949\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">a tipping point&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a>, beyond which vast swaths of the forest are expected to turn into dry, degraded savannahs. This will lead to staggering losses in biodiversity, carbon and the wellbeing of humans that depend on the forest&rsquo;s ecosystem functions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Climate change<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The climate crisis is another leading cause of biodiversity loss and is expected to become the main driver as it intensifies. Climatic changes have already started to <a class=\"link link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/site\/assets\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/02\/SR15_Chapter3_Low_Res.pdf\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">shift the distribution of biomes&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a> (major ecosystem types such as deserts and rainforests) and species ranges. Climate change is also negatively affecting the timing (&lsquo;phenology&rsquo;) and <a class=\"link link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/resources\/frontiers-2022-noise-blazes-and-mismatches\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">synchronisation of ecological events&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a> like leaf budding, insect hatchings and egg-laying by birds, causing major disruption to species interactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the ecosystems most vulnerable to climate change are coral reefs, which are also the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth, sustaining the livelihoods of 1 billion people. <a class=\"link link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2022\/02\/coral-reefs-extinct-global-warming-new-study\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Up to 99% of coral reefs may disappear if global temperature rise is not kept below 1.5&deg;C&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a> above pre-industrial levels.
