This diversity can be observed at different scales: in the genetic variability of a population or in the variety of functions that different species perform in an ecosystem, for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most common metrics of biodiversity is the number, or &lsquo;richness&rsquo;, of the species present. The exact number in existence today is unknown but likely falls between <a class=\"link link--external\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/how-many-species-on-earth-why-thats-a-simple-question-but-hard-to-answer-114909\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\">8 and 14 million&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a> (although some estimates go as high as 100 million or even a trillion species). Only about 1.2 million of these have been described by scientists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The species inhabiting Earth today have not evolved in isolation: they <a class=\"link link--external\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/ppp3.10127\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\">co-evolved, interacting with each other&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a> and forming complex networks of ecological associations. Organised into ecosystems, this web of life enables the ecological processes that all life &ndash; including humankind &ndash; depends on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An ecosystem comprises all the living organisms and the physical environment that interact together in a particular place. Ecosystems are in a constant state of flux. The key ecological processes that sustain them include <a class=\"link link--external\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/scitable\/knowledge\/library\/species-interactions-and-competition-102131429\/\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\">interactions between different species&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a>, dispersal (the movement of organisms between different areas), and natural disturbance. Indeed, ecosystems become adapted to commonly occurring disturbances, like flooding in river floodplains or fires in savannahs. For example, some <a class=\"link link--external\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kew.org\/read-and-watch\/fire-seeds-south-africa#:~:text=Smoke%20seeds&amp;text=Serotinous%20species%2C%20which%20store%20their,usually%20germinate%20without%20further%20help.\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\">fire-adapted plants&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a> need fire to burn their seeds before they can sprout. The species composition within ecosystems and globally also changes naturally, with some species being born and others dying out all the time, at a low <a class=\"link link--external\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.1400253#:~:text=In%20nearly%20all%20comparisons%20of,known%20as%20E%2FMSY).\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\">background rate&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Problems begin when ecosystems are put under too much extra pressure by humans, for instance due to urbanisation, overharvesting or climate change. When this happens, key species or functional groups like corals or pollinators may decline so drastically that they cannot sustain their function anymore. In such cases, cascading effects may reverberate throughout the whole ecosystem, sometimes to the point of causing <a class=\"link link--external\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/one-fifth-of-ecosystems-in-danger-of-collapse-heres-what-that-might-look-like-148137\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\">ecosystem collapse&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why does biodiversity matter to humans?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a class=\"link link--external\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.1525002113\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\">Many people argue&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a> that nature is worth protecting for its own sake and for the sake of relationships we hold with it. However, biodiversity is also essential for human existence and wellbeing. It has been identified as one of the nine <a class=\"link link--external\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stockholmresilience.org\/research\/planetary-boundaries.html\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\">&lsquo;planetary boundaries&rsquo;&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a> that define the &lsquo;ecological safe space&rsquo; in which humanity can continue to exist and thrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Collectively, the benefits (but also negative impacts) that humans receive from nature are often termed &lsquo;ecosystem services&rsquo;, or <a class=\"link link--external\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ipbes.net\/global-assessment\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\">&lsquo;nature&rsquo;s contributions to people&rsquo;&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a>. It is worth noting, however, that both concepts have been <a class=\"link link--external\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0921800921000963\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\">criticised for being too human-centred or human-focused&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a>, and should be replaced by a morality based on care for nature. How people value nature and the benefits they derive from it varies with different cultures, world views, knowledge systems or experiences of nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of us rely on nature to provide so-called &lsquo;regulating&rsquo; functions such as clean air, water, soil productivity and a stabilising effect on the climate. Natural ecosystems on land and sea are the <a class=\"link link--external\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.5281\/zenodo.3831673\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\">sole sinks for anthropogenic carbon emissions&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a>, sequestering around 60% of global emissions per year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nature also constitutes an important foundation for the economy: <a class=\"link link--external\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www3.weforum.org\/docs\/WEF_New_Nature_Economy_Report_2020.pdf\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\">more than half of global GDP is dependent on nature&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a>, across industries as varied as agriculture, construction, tourism and retail. However, biodiversity is especially critical for subsistence livelihoods: <a class=\"link link--external\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ipbes.net\/global-assessment\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\">more than two billion people&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a> directly rely on wild species for income, food or fuel, and around four billion people for their healthcare and medicinal needs.
