Particularly suitable wind speeds are found in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS)&rsquo;s <a class=\"link link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/renewable-energy-planning-database-monthly-extract\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Renewable Energy Planning database&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a>, there were 707 operational onshore wind sites in the UK as of May 2018 &ndash; this includes sites with just a single turbine. While a number contain a single turbine, the largest, located at Lang Kames in the Shetland Islands, is set to have 103 turbines, producing 370 MW of electricity <a class=\"link link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.energyvoice.com\/otherenergy\/214302\/shetland-wind-farm-plans-revived-with-new-mainland-link-proposal\/\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">by 2024&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a>. Of the 14 sites with a planned installed capacity of more than 50 MW, all but two are in Scotland. The majority (56%) of the 32 sites currently under construction are also located in Scotland. A number of other windfarm proposals are at different stages of the planning process.<\/p>\n<p>The Government gave its backing to onshore wind projects on &lsquo;<a class=\"link link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/consultations\/contracts-for-difference-cfd-proposed-amendments-to-the-scheme\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">remote islands&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a>&rsquo; (such as the Outer Hebrides) in June 2018. This more favourable attitude is apparently supported by the public: a <a class=\"link link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/d25d2506sfb94s.cloudfront.net\/cumulus_uploads\/document\/3hx70b1nzc\/RenewableUK_June18_GB_w.pdf\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">YouGov poll&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a> in July 2018 showed that 69% of people would back more onshore wind turbines being built and 66% would support a change in government policy to ease restrictions where there was local support.<\/p>\n<h3>How are planning applications assessed?<\/h3>\n<p>Sites identified for planned windfarms are subject to a formal application assessment. Even if approved, not all sites continue to build stage. Since 2015 Local Planning Authorities have assessed applications for all installations, regardless of size (previously, commercial windfarm developments over 50 MW were assessed by national government). <a class=\"link link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/renewable-and-low-carbon-energy#noise-impacts-of-wind-turbines\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Government guidance&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a> states that applications should not be approved unless the proposed site has been identified as suitable for wind energy development in a Local or Neighbourhood Plan.<\/p>\n<p>The National Planning Policy Framework aims to protect Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Sites of Special Scientific Interest and areas of high national heritage value from negative impacts from windfarm developments. Additionally, most commercial-scale onshore wind turbine applications require an Environmental Impact Assessment, which assesses the potential visual impacts and changes to landscape and biodiversity that could result. The EIA can directly inform a decision to approve or reject a submitted application.
