For example, the UK&rsquo;s <a class=\"link link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forestry.gov.uk\/pdf\/6_planting_more_trees.pdf\/%24file\/6_planting_more_trees.pdf\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Forestry Commission&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a> illustrates the possible extent of the effect in the following terms: &lsquo;the carbon sequestered (or stored) by half a hectare of conifer woodland &hellip; can compensate for the carbon dioxide emissions associated with car fuel consumption during one average driver&rsquo;s lifetime.&rsquo;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is the extent of tree planting and what role can plantations play in reducing CO<sub>2<\/sub> levels?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tree planting and plantation forestry are well established in both the private and public sectors. The most recent data from the UN&rsquo;s&nbsp;<a class=\"link link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/forestry\/fra\/fra2010\/en\/\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Food and Agriculture Organisation&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a>&nbsp;suggests that plantation forests comprised an <a class=\"link link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/3\/a-i4793e.pdf\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">estimated 7%&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a> of global forest area in 2015. Most of these forests were established in areas that were previously not under forest cover, at least in recent years (this is known as &lsquo;afforestation&rsquo;). Trees are also planted as part of efforts to restore natural forests (&lsquo;reforestation&rsquo;), as well as in agroforestry, which involves increasing tree cover on agricultural land and pastures.<\/p>\n<p>Under certain conditions, plantations can grow relatively fast, thus absorbing CO<sub>2<\/sub> at higher rates than natural forests. In the absence of major disturbances, newly planted or regenerating forests can continue to absorb carbon for 20 to 50 years or more. In comparison to preventing the loss of natural forests, however, tree planting has the potential to make only a limited contribution to reducing CO<sub>2<\/sub> levels in the atmosphere. In 2000, a <a class=\"link link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/pdf\/special-reports\/spm\/srl-en.pdf\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">special report&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a>&nbsp;by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concluded that tree planting could sequester (remove from the atmosphere) around 1.1&ndash;1.6 gigatonnes (Gt) of CO<sub>2<\/sub> per year. A more recent <a class=\"link link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smithschool.ox.ac.uk\/research\/sustainable-finance\/publications\/Stranded-Carbon-Assets-and-NETs.pdf\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">paper&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a>, published by Oxford University in 2015, estimated that afforestation could remove in the range of 1&ndash;3 Gt of CO<sub>2<\/sub> per year in 2030. For comparison, total global greenhouse gas emissions were equivalent to <a class=\"link link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/edgar.jrc.ec.europa.eu\/news_docs\/jrc-2016-trends-in-global-co2-emissions-2016-report-103425.pdf\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">49.3 Gt&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a> of CO<sub>2<\/sub> in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Some tree-planting projects established to absorb CO<sub>2<\/sub> have turned out to be non-viable due to the cost of acquiring inputs or protecting young trees from fire, drought, pests or diseases. The cost of land is another barrier to widespread tree-planting, especially where there is competition with other land uses such as food or biofuel production.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tree planting under the Kyoto Protocol and Paris Agreement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tree planting and reforestation were included as activities eligible for finance under the&nbsp;<a class=\"link link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2011\/mar\/11\/kyoto-protocol\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Kyoto Protocol&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a>. Kyoto&rsquo;s rules and procedures, however, restricted the scale and scope of these activities, with projects struggling to get off the ground and as a result the carbon sequestered has been almost negligible. The <a class=\"link link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/files\/meetings\/paris_nov_2015\/application\/pdf\/paris_agreement_english_.pdf\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Paris Agreement&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a> on climate change encourages the &lsquo;enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries&rsquo;. India, for example, has allocated <a class=\"link link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/trevornace\/2017\/07\/05\/indias-response-to-the-paris-agreement-plant-66-million-trees-in-12-hours\/#28b7a3eb7606\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">US$6.2 billion to reforest 95 million hectares&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a> by 2030 as part of its commitment to the Paris Agreement.. But overall, tree planting is unlikely to be implemented on a scale to reach even the relatively modest potential contribution outlined by the IPPC &ndash; especially in the absence of a high&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lse.ac.uk\/granthaminstitute\/faqs\/what-is-a-carbon-price-and-why-do-we-need-one\/\">carbon price<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>This FAQ was updated in January 2018.
