They mostly fall into two categories: those designed to remove carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2<\/sub>) from the air and those that try to limit the amount of sunlight that reaches the Earth&rsquo;s surface.<\/p>\n<p>The significant <a class=\"link link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/royalsociety.org\/topics-policy\/projects\/climate-change-evidence-causes\/basics-of-climate-change\/\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">increase in greenhouse gases&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a> in the atmosphere due to human activity since the Industrial Revolution is <a class=\"link link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/publications_and_data\/ar4\/wg1\/en\/faq-1-3.html\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">enhancing the natural greenhouse effect&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a> and causing climate change. Others involve technologies that as yet have not been proven on any significant scale although some are at pilot project stage. For example, ocean fertilisation may have unwanted side effects on the ecology of the oceans, while growing biomass for BECCS, and large-scale tree-planting, would cause <a class=\"link link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10584-012-0684-1\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">competition for land space&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a> for food crops, nature conservation and other uses.<\/p>\n<h2>What is the aim of Solar Radiation Management and how would it work?<\/h2>\n<p>Solar Radiation Management (SRM) aims to bring down temperatures by reflecting a small amount of sunlight back into space, to limit the amount that reaches the Earth&rsquo;s surface.<\/p>\n<p>One proposed technique is to <a class=\"link link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.srmgi.org\/what-is-srm\/\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">inject minute particles of sulphur dioxide into the stratosphere&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a> (the upper atmosphere). These particles, known as aerosols, would reflect some sunlight back into space, a process known as &lsquo;global dimming&rsquo;. This technique copies the natural cooling effect caused by major <a class=\"link link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/volcano.oregonstate.edu\/climate-cooling\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">volcanic eruptions&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Another proposal is &lsquo;<a class=\"link link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.srmgi.org\/what-is-srm\/\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">marine cloud brightening&rsquo;&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a>, where the clouds that cover oceans could be made lighter in colour and more reflective by spraying tiny droplets of seawater into them, causing them to reflect more sunlight back out into space. This is a way of enhancing the albedo effect, the way that light surfaces reflect more heat than dark surfaces. Another way to enhance albedo is to increase the reflectiveness of the land surface, for example by increasing the amount of <a class=\"link link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1088\/1748-9326\/7\/2\/024004\/meta\" aria-describedby=\"link-description-new-window\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">white rooftops and light-coloured pavements&#65279;<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" role=\"img\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M14.42 1.04L3.2.7a.8.8 0 00-.8.76v.1a.8.8 0 00.76.7l9.39.3L.93 14.16c-.3.3-.3.8 0 1.1l.09.08c.3.23.73.2 1.01-.07L13.65 3.65l.29 9.4a.8.8 0 00.8.76.79.79 0 00.77-.8L15.17 1.8a.82.82 0 00-.75-.76z\" fill=\"#2e3152\"><\/path><\/svg><\/a> in urban areas, or enhancing albedo on a larger scale by covering large areas of desert in reflective sheets, or planting crops, shrubs and grasses that are light in colour.
