How can we act fast enough to avoid the worst of the damage of climate change? Award-winning science fiction writer Kim Stanley Robinson will discuss the political economy needed to cope with the existential threats we are facing and how he has explored this in his writing, in conversation with Elizabeth Robinson, Director of the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, and LSE President Larry Kramer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meet our speakers and chair<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Kim Stanley Robinson is an American science fiction writer. He is the author of about twenty books, including the internationally bestselling Mars trilogy<\/em>, and more recently Red Moon<\/em>, New York 2140<\/em> and The Ministry for the Future<\/em>. He was part of the U.S. National Science Foundation’s Antarctic Artists and Writers’ Program in 1995 and 2016, and a featured speaker at COP-26 in Glasgow, as a guest of the UK government and the UN. His work has been translated into 28 languages, and won awards including the Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy awards. In 2016 asteroid 72432 was named “Kimrobinson.”   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elizabeth Robinson (@EJZRobinson66<\/path><\/svg><\/a>) is Director of the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at LSE. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Larry Kramer has been President and Vice Chancellor of LSE since April 2024. A constitutional scholar, university administrator, and philanthropic leader, he was previously the President of the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and the Dean of Stanford Law School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This event is part of the LSE Festival: Power and Politics running from Monday 10 to Saturday 15 June 2024, with a series of events exploring how power and politics shape our world. Booking for all Festival events will open on Monday 13 May.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event is free and open to all, but a ticket is required. The event will be hybrid, with an in-person audience and an online audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
