Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is at an inflection point. As voluntary CDR markets mature and compliance frameworks begin to take shape\, not least in the UK\, the question of how to build markets that are credible\, scalable\, and policy-coherent has never been more pressing. This event will bring together leading stakeholders from across the CDR market to explore where markets\, policy\, and standards are heading\, and what needs to happen to accelerate responsible deployment of CDR.
The event will begin with a networking breakfast\, followed by the panel discussion and Q&A. The session will open with a short introduction to TRACEcdr (Transparent Reporting and Certification for CDR)\, an interactive tool developed by the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at LSE and powered by AlliedOffsets. It provides information on monitoring\, reporting and verification (MRV) protocols and analyses the carbon accounting methodologies that underpin them.
This session will feature a panel of experts across science\, policy\, and market development\, including Jonathan Lindsell (Co-head of the GGR Deployment Team\, DESNZ)\, Paul Zakkour (Consulting Director\, Carbon Counts)\, Mai Bui (Director of Climate Science\, Supercritical) and Anton Root (Co-founder\, AlliedOffsets). The panel will explore key questions relating to which methodologies are scaling\, how the market is evolving relative to public discourse\, and the trade-offs between durability\, scalability\, cost\, and co-benefits\, as well as the role of traceability in reducing risk.
The session will provide a space for buyers\, suppliers\, researchers\, and policymakers to engage with the latest insights and connect with others in the CDR market.
Following the panel and Q&A\, there will be time for informal networking with refreshments provided.
Jon Lindsell is head of Greenhouse Gas Removal Deployment in the East Coast CCUS Cluster\, for the Dept of Energy Security and Net Zero. He has worked on GGRs since 2023\, following previous roles in decarbonising power and fuel in BEIS\, Brexit/Northern Ireland negotiations on customs and goods movement in Cabinet Office and DExEU. Prior to entering the civil service he worked on charity governance reform and for the think tank Civitas.
Paul Zakkour is a Director of Carbon Counts\, a climate policy consultancy\, a Technical Expert with IETA [International Emissions Trading Association]\, a Visiting Professor at the London School of Economics\, Grantham Research Institute\, a Technical Expert with the UNFCCC Article 6.4 Supervisory Body\, and a Lead Author for the IPCC Methodology Report on CCUS [carbon capture\, use and storage] and CDR [carbon dioxide removal].. He has 24-years’ experience in the field of climate policy\, including extensive work carbon pricing policy and the integration of CCUS and CDR into trading and crediting systems. Paul holds a PhD in environmental technology from Imperial College London and lives and works in Germany.
Dr Mai Bui is the Director of Climate Science and Policy at Supercritical\, a carbon removal marketplace focused exclusively on durable CDR\, providing deep scientific due diligence integrated with policy and market insights. With over 15 years of experience across academia\, policy\, and industry in carbon dioxide removal (CDR)\, CCS\, and clean energy\, Mai continues to serve as an Honorary Research Associate at Imperial\, maintaining close ties with the global CDR research community. She has contributed to the IPCC’s work on carbon removal methodologies and currently serves as an Expert Working Group Member on carbon removals for the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Mai has also advised the UK Government and currently sits on the Advisory Board for Puro.earth and is part of the UK's DESNZ Expert Group for GGR Standards. Her expertise supports the development of high-integrity standards and methodologies for measurement\, reporting and verification (MRV) of CO₂ removal technologies.
Anton Root is the co-founder at AlliedOffsets\, the leading database for voluntary carbon market activity globally.
Additionally\, Root is the Co-Chair of the Climate Action Data (CAD) Trust\, a World Bank and IETA led initiative aiming to bring transparency to the voluntary carbon market by connecting national and voluntary registries together. Additionally\, Root represents AlliedOffsets in market-wide initiatives to promote transparency and synchronization among various data providers in the market\, including the S&P Global-led Carbon Open Data Protocol\, and the ICVCM’s Data and Infrastructure Providers Network.
Prior to AlliedOffsets\, Root was the Head of Research at AlliedCrowds\, where he conducted data analysis and created numerous reports and guidebooks on fundraising for entrepreneurs across emerging economies.
