LSE European Institute – APCO Worldwide Perspectives on Europe Series
Date: Thursday 14 January 2010
Venue: Old Theatre, Old Building
Speaker: Anders Borg
Respondent: George Osborne MP
Faced with a record deficit and an accelerating debt, the UK will have to embark on a process of massive fiscal consolidation in order to bring public finances back to sustainability. How is this best done and what lessons can be learned from the Swedish experience of fiscal consolidation in the 1990s?
Anders Borg is Minister for Finance in Sweden and has chaired the ECOFIN Council during the 2009 Swedish EU Presidency. He has previously worked as an advisor on monetary policy issues at the Swedish Central Bank and as chief economist at several Swedish banks.
George Osborne was elected as the Member of Parliament for Tatton, Cheshire, in June 2001. Since May 2005 George has served as the Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer, shadowing Gordon Brown until June 2007, and now shadowing Alistair Darling. He is also in charge of coordinating the Conservative Party's General Election Campaign. He was responsible for managing David Cameron's successful campaign for leadership of the Conservative Party. George has served as Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Shadow Work and Pensions Minister, Shadow Economic Secretary and as an Opposition Whip. He has also been a member of the Public Accounts Select Committee and the Transport Select Committee.
