Meeting the Challenge of Development - An Action Agenda to achieve the Millennium Development Goals

LSE and LSESU Development Society Public Lecture

Date: Thursday 3 February 2005
Time: 2.15pm
: Old Theatre, Old Building
Speaker:  Ian Goldin
Chair: Dr Jean-Paul Faguet

Ian Goldin will be approaching the topic from a macro-perspective, discussing the broader development agenda, including aid, trade, migration and agriculture.

Ian Goldin assumed his current position as Vice President of the World Bank in May 2003. Dr. Goldin provides leadership in the relationship between the Bank and the global community. This includes questions of global governance and the development and communication of ideas to enhance development effectiveness. In this position, Dr. Goldin is responsible for managing the World Bank's global communications programs and contact with key constituencies - government officials, parliamentarians, NGOs, businesses and academics - and for overseeing relations with the United Nations and the global affairs agenda. Previously, Ian was the Director of Development Policy at the World Bank.

Prior to rejoining the Bank in February 2001 as Senior Policy Adviser, Mr. Goldin spent five years as the Chief Executive and Managing Director of the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA). He led the transformation of the DBSA, to commercial independence and investment grade status, allowing it to fund off the capital markets and act as a prime catalyst for investment and public-private partnerships in the 14 countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). Before this, Mr. Goldin worked as a Principal Economist at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), and at the World Bank as a Senior Economist in the Middle East and North Africa Region. His prior positions were as Director of Commodities at LMC, London, and Head of the Trade Program at the OECD Development Centre in Paris.

This lecture is part of Development Week, which is being marked by the LSESU Development Society with a series of events, from Monday 31 January to Thursday 3 February.
