Shan Quan Chande (BSc Management 2015) and Christian Fohrby (MSc Government 2015) were today announced as Schwarzman Scholars, and will be part of the 111-strong inaugural class who will study for a master’s degree at Schwarzman College on the Tsinghua University campus in Beijing.

Shan and Christian were selected from more than 3,000 candidates following a rigorous application process. They are set to join students from 32 countries and 71 universities around the world, with only a handful chosen from UK universities.christian fornby

Inspired by the Rhodes scholarship at the University of Oxford, the Schwarzman Scholarship is designed to help future leaders meet the challenges of the 21st century and beyond by preparing them to better understand China’s culture, economy, governance and motivations. As part of the master’s programme, the Scholars will study public policy, economics and business, and international studies.

Commenting on the announcement of the Schwarzman Scholars, the programme’s founder, Stephen A. Schwarzman said:

“The calibre of this first class of Schwarzman Scholars is truly exceptional. Each Scholar has demonstrated tremendous leadership potential at a young age and differentiated themselves through a myriad of academic and non-academic pursuits. It is my intention that the Schwarzman Scholars will return home and provide leadership in a changing, complex and dynamic world. I have every confidence that this class will be such leaders.”

The Scholarship is fully-funded for all participants, including travel costs and a personal allowance.

The Global Director of Admissions for Schwarzman Scholars, Rob Garris, is due to hold an information session for potential scholarship applicants on Monday 22 February 2016 at LSE.
