This course provides an essential understanding of the basic theories relevant to the management of work organisations in order to provide a basis for practising ‘evidence-based management’ (using theory to inform practice). As such, it is appealingly broad, covering topics as wide-ranging as strategy formulation, people management, culture and diversity, innovation and decision making. It also explores some of the major issues currently faced by business organisations and what management responses to such might be. Reflecting the multidisciplinary nature of management theory and practice, the module makes use of ideas from economics, sociology and psychology to develop students’ understanding of the topic. Overall, the module will help students to develop a greater awareness of the types of management skills and knowledge which are increasingly sought in the workplace.
Topics covered in the course include:
The growth of the firm and the rise of management
Disciplinary origins of management theory
Strategy formulation and planning
The contemporary context of workplace management, for example globalisation and cross-cultural management
The principals of behaviour within and between organisations
Teaching will be organised around daily interactive lectures and seminars. Through the use of case studies, participants will develop their critical management skills by applying learned theories to real world organisational problems.
The course is ideally suited to those who wish to develop a detailed, critical understanding of contemporary management.
There is no set text for this course. Students will be given a set of photocopied materials, and will additionally be expected to make use of reading materials available electronically in the Library.
