I've been accepted! What shall I do now?

When do I have to pay my tuition fees?

Tuition fees should be paid once you have received a formal offer email. Only once tuition fees are paid in full is a place on the programme guaranteed.

Can I pay by Credit or Debit card?

Yes, this is our recommended method of payment. Please note that we do not accept American Express, but all other major credit/ debit cards are accepted.

Can I pay by bank transfer?

All payment is to be made online through your LSE for You account. We recommend that students pay using a credit/ debit card, as this method is quicker and more secure. However, if you wish to pay via a Bank Transfer, you will also need to follow the steps on the LSE for You payment page. This will provide you with the bank account details for paying London School of Economics and Political Science via Western Union. You will need to print this document and take it to your bank and instruct them to make the payment as soon as possible. Please note the rate provided will only be valid for 72 hours.

Further information regarding payment will be provided after an application has been assessed and an offer made. Students requiring help to organise the payment of tuition fees should contact the Summer School Office by telephone on +44 (0)20 7955 7227 or email at summer.school@lse.ac.uk.

Is it possible to pay in installments?

If you are unable to pay the full amount in one credit/debit card transaction, it is possible to pay in installments. On the online payment page, simply enter the amount you wish to pay in the ‘payment amount (£)’ box. This can be done as many times as necessary until the fees are paid in full. Before commencing, please inform your credit card company that you are intending on making a series of smaller payments, otherwise your card may be blocked due to a suspected fraud alert.

After I make payment, how long does it take for LSE to receive it?

As a guide, credit/debit card payments take 2-3 working days and bank transfers take 5-10 working days. Please note that these times can differ, depending on the country the money is being transferred from, and the currency in which the transaction was made.

What should I do if my credit card has been rejected?

The LSE Finance Department will contact students directly where there is a problem with a credit card payment. Students will then need to contact their credit card issuer to resolve the problem. Usually payments are rejected because of security measures put in place to protect from fraud - international payments are more likely to be rejected on these grounds. It may be necessary to arrange with your card issuer to make a specific payment overseas. The following checklist may be of some help:

  • Check that your card is authorised to make international payments
  • Check you have sufficient funds / credit limit available
  • Check your bank's daily limit for your debit / credit card covers the amount you are paying online

When making a large payment, always notify your card issuer in advance how much you will be paying, who will be paying and when the payment will be made; this reduces the risk of the payment being rejected for card security reasons.

Will I get a refund if I withdraw from the programme?

Does LSE offer any financial aid for Summer School students?

Unfortunately the LSE is not able to offer any financial assistance to Summer School students as this is reserved for regular year students.

Do any scholarships exist for the Summer School?

Unfortunately the LSE does not offer scholarships for the Summer School.

Do I need a visa to study at the Summer School?

To check whether or not you need a visa for Summer School study, please visit the UKVI website. Visa regulations change frequently therefore students are strongly advised to browse LSE's International Student Visa Advice Team (ISVAT) for information and advice. If a student does require a visa then they should ensure that they apply to the Summer School as soon as possible, as the visa process can often be very lengthy.

When should I apply for a visa letter?

You should apply for a visa letter from us as soon as you have paid your tuition fees, and, if necessary, accommodation fees. In some countries the visa process can be very lengthy so please allow enough time. Please see the Visa FAQs section for more information.

Will you provide me with a Summer School visa letter?

We will provide students with a Summer School visa letter that can be used for their visa application. The letter has been designed following instructions from the visa authorities and cannot be amended to suit individual requests.

How do I apply for a Summer School visa letter?

Following your acceptance onto the programme you will need to complete the following before requesting a Summer School visa letter:

  • Pay tuition fees
  • Pay accommodation fees if staying in LSE Halls.

If you are arranging your own accommodation we will state this on the letter and will not confirm any accommodation details.

A Summer School visa letter will not be produced until the above are completed. Once completed students can request the Summer School visa letter via their LSE For You account.

How long will it take for my Summer School visa letter to arrive?

There are two delivery options, we can either post Summer School visa letters out via regular mail or students can request that we send them by courier which will be subject to an additional charge.

Estimated delivery times for regular post:

  • UK: 2-3 days
  • Mainland Western Europe: 1 week
  • Eastern Europe, Russia, Turkey: 1-2 weeks
  • USA, Brazil: 1-2 weeks
  • India: 4-6 weeks
  • China: 4-6 weeks

It is advisable to make tuition and accommodation (if staying in LSE Halls) fee payments as early as possible not only to secure your place, but also to ensure that you can apply for and receive your visa in time for the start of the programme.

What if my visa is declined?

If your visa is refused we will refund you the following amounts:

Date of Withdrawal

Tuition Fee Refund (%)

At least 30 calendar days before Commencement Date

90

14-29 calendar days before Commencement Date

50

Less than 14 calendar days before Commencement Date

No refund

If you receive a visa refusal you may wish to contact LSE's International Student Visa Advice Team (ISVAT)  who can give you advice on how to proceed. Questions relating to the refund of Summer School tuition fees should be directed to the Summer School office.

Can I get a refund for my accommodation fees?

The accommodation refunds are separate to tuition fee refunds. Conditions and regulations regarding refunds can be found on the Accommodation page.

Can I leave the country at weekends during the Summer School?

You will need to check with your local visa authority and/or with LSE's International Student Immigration Service to see whether travel outside of the UK during the programme is allowed on your visa type.

Where can I stay?

We are able to offer Summer School students some of London’s most centrally located student accommodation. The types of room and facilities available vary depending on the hall but all are within easy walking distance, or a short bus journey, from campus.

It is only possible to apply for accommodation once a formal offer of a place at the Summer School has been made. Please note rooms are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis, so early applications are essential. The Summer School regrets that it is unable to guarantee accommodation for all applicants. More information can be found on our accommodation pages.

What other options are available to me?

Accommodation in London can be extremely expensive and quite hard to find over the summer. It may be possible to find a short term let through other reputable websites. Students may wish to look at LSE Vacations who open some student residences to the general public in vacation periods. Should you wish to book a hotel it is highly recommended that you book early on as London is a major tourist destination. However, in terms of value for money LSE accommodation is one of the more reasonable options.

Who should I contact about accommodation issues?

All queries relating to accommodation should be directed to the Accommodation Office. You can contact them at residences.summerschool@lse.ac.uk or +44 (0)20 7955 7676. The Summer School Office are unable to answer questions about submitted accommodation applications.
