Sarah Staehelin

Who are you?
I am from Basel, Switzerland, where I work as a high school teacher. I majored in English and History at the University of Basel, with a focus on South African history.

What did you study on the LSE-UCT July School?
I studied “The State and Development” with Professor Mkandawire at the LSE-UCT July School. The course gave me a different look at what I was already familiar with from a historical perspective – it was fascinating to step into this world and be taught by a fantastic teacher. This was exactly what I had hoped when I chose the course: even though I was a stranger to economics, this course was very accessible and allowed me to change perspectives. My background knowledge from history is now very nicely embedded in and connected to economic knowledge.

What was your experience of Cape Town?
It was my first time to South Africa – and I loved it. Cape Town is a vibrant city, surrounded by breathtaking scenery. The trips we took on the weekend were lovely and allowed me to see quite a bit of Cape Town’s surroundings. UCT’s campus is very pretty and our lunch breaks on the Jameson Hall steps were an integral part of the experience!
