Travel and accommodation

The LSE-PKU Summer School does not arrange travel or accommodation for participants, but is happy to provide information and support with bookings.

A visa may be required for entry to China.

Accommodation is not arranged by the LSE-PKU Summer School, and is not included in the tuition fee. This allows participants to arrange accommodation which fits their personal requirements and budget.

A number of rooms have been reserved for participants on the LSE-PKU Summer School at the PKU Global Village|, immediately opposite the East Gate of Peking University.  Booking information will be provided to individuals once registration has been completed. Please note that availability is limited and rooms will be allocated in order of bookings received..

Accommodation at a number of other facilities convenient for the Peking University campus is available. In previous years, some participants have made accommodation arrangements through the Beijing Buddy| student relocation specialists.

Accommodation of a basic but comfortable standard is likely to cost around £450 for fourteen nights. It is recommended that participants budget approximately £300 for meals and other additional expenses during the LSE-PKU Summer School.

The PKU website| has a useful map of the area and accommodation options.

Registration for the LSE-PKU Summer School takes place at Peking University from 2pm to 4pm on the afternoon of Sunday 09 August. Participants generally arrive over the weekend prior to the beginning of the Summer School, and are advised to give themselves sufficient opportunity to acclimatise to Beijing (and the August weather) and the time-zone, GMT+8.

PKU student helpers will be available at Beijing Capital Airport between 8am and 8pm on Saturday 08 August to welcome participants and assist them at the airport and in finding transport to their destination.

Courses end with an exam on the afternoon of Friday 21 August. A farewell gala dinner is scheduled for the Friday evening and most participants depart from Beijing over the weekend after the programme ends.

Many participants take the opportunity to arrange private travel or other activities in Beijing, China or elsewhere in Asia either before or after the LSE-PKU Summer School. Given the intensive nature of the programme programme, there is little opportunity for extensive travel during the LSE-PKU Summer School. Arranging some additional time to explore Beijing and China outside the dates of the programme is consistently a top recommendation from previous participants to those considering joining the programme!

Most participants will require a visa to enter China. Please confirm your situation and application procedures with the Chinese embassy in your country of residence.

The LSE-PKU Summer School is able to provide letters of invitation to fully registered students for use in the visa application process on request.

Social events

Social and sightseeing events are arranged for the weekend in the middle of the programme. This usually includes a visit to the Great Wall section at Mutianyu. These events are optional and can be booked during registration in Beijing. An additional charge is payable.

A gala dinner, for all participants on the LSE-PKU Summer School including faculty and other staff, is arranged in a local restaurant on the final evening of the programme.
