Examination grades for General Course students

In common with all LSE undergraduates, General Course students undertake four year-long courses (or their equivalent in half-units).

Class grades are summary letter grades provided by class teachers once the teaching has finished for their particular course.   All class marks are awarded in accordance with established departmental assessment criteria, but grades normally summarise achievement in ‘formative’ coursework (e.g. essays and/or problem sets),any presentations made in class, the frequency and quality of class participation, and attendance.

The class grades are distinct from the final marks General Course students (and regular degree students) receive for their examination performance.  All examinations are double-marked by internal examiners and moderated by an external examiner from another British university. In no case is an examiner aware of either the examinee or their status, e.g. whether visiting General Course or regular undergraduate student

* Figures correct as of 4 March 2014.

** General Course students typically take four examinations. The figures show the grade distribution of their exam marks.

*** BSc/BA/LLB degrees: these are the end-of-year final exam grades achieved in examination papers taken by all other LSE undergraduates at levels 2 and 3 on all of the School's three-year specialist degrees. The great majority of such undergraduates took four examination papers. Their generally higher grades (especially at the upper end of the mark range) probably reflect the fact that these LSE students are specialising in their major field, whereas the General Course students typically select a much wider variety of courses.
