As a General Course student we want you to feel as much a part of LSE as every other student of the School. However, we recognise that, unlike other undergraduate students, you have only one year in which to experience everything London, the UK and Europe has to offer. Consequently, we have put together a range of social activities organised by the School, SomewhereNew.com and International Friends, that will allow you to meet other General Course students and will give you an opportunity to explore the city, country and continent you have come to study in.
LSE Events for General Course Students
A well established event at the start of each new academic year is the Welcome Party for General Course students hosted by the Dean of the General Course. Held in the week prior to the start of the Michaelmas Term, this popular icebreaker takes place on a chartered boat down the River Thames. A great way to meet your fellow students against the backdrop of the City’s most iconic landmarks before settling down to the serious work of studying and exploring London!
Cumberland Lodge Residential Visit
An escape from London to Cumberland Lodge (a country house in Windsor Great Park) is an annual event in the General Course calendar. The General Course visit acts as an introduction to both the School and the UK and involves a mixture of academic seminars from eminent speakers and social activities, as well as the opportunity to explore the Park and Windsor itself. Held over the first weekend of the Michaelmas Term it is open to around 50 students each year, with the cost subsidised by the School.
An account by GC student Robbie Ryan for the 2015 visit can be read here.
The General Course Thanksgiving Dinner
A recent addition to the General Course Social Calendar, the Thanksgiving Dinner is a traditional 3 course meal with “all the fixin’s” and wine, specially prepared by LSE Catering. It is a great feast for up to 70 General Course students and the General Course Dean is usually able to organise an NFL broadcast in the background.
End of Term Party
The first event organised by the student elected GC President, the End of Term Party celebrates your first completed term at the LSE. Hosted at a venue of the President’s discretion it is also an opportunity to farewell those going home or away for the Christmas break. For those staying it is a chance to see who else will be around and plan something during the festivities.
The General Course Summer Ball is the last hurrah and opportunity to say a final farewell to your friends as a group. Hosted by the General Course Dean and the GC President, students enjoy a 3 course meal with wine, followed by music and dancing. A great way to see off the year and reflect on experiences shared and enjoyed.
Throughout the year you will be able to explore the UK and Europe on a range of day trips and short breaks. Past excursions have covered the delights of Amsterdam, the ruggedness of the Scottish Highlands, and the joys of an English brewery! Each trip is subsidised by LSE and offered to General Course students via SomewhereNew.com at a significant discount.
