As Dean of the General Course I'm delighted you have chosen to spend the year with us. You are joined by 330 other study abroad students from 123 institutions in over 20 countries. We hope you will meet many of your fellow GCers at the various social events we organise specifically for you.
As not only a General Course, but also an LSE student, you are encouraged to involve yourself fully in all aspects of School life. The Students' Union has over 200 clubs and societies for you to join, covering interests as disparate as anime/manga and underground dance music. Those of you who are keen on sports can participate in the activities of the Athletics Union and make use of the 25 acres of playing fields the School owns in South London. You also have full access to the extensive facilities of the University of London (of which LSE is a part), located a short walk from the Aldwych in Senate House on Malet Street.
We believe your academic experience should be challenging, rewarding and enjoyable. To this end I run a number of seminars at the start of the academic year covering various aspects of your study. These are supplemental to the regular study skills sessions that run throughout the year and are open to all LSE students. You should also make full use of the personal tutor allocated you by your department and your class teachers.
Lastly, but by no means leastly, please do remember to come and see me during the course of your time with us! I like to meet each of you at least once and am here to help, counsel and advise on any aspect of your studies at the School or your life in London.
I look forward to seeing you soon.
Mr Mark Hoffman
Dean of the General Course
