What Future for Europe – Asia, America and the Global Economy

The third Masterclass, What Future for Europe – Asia, America and the Global Economy, will take place in Madrid between Monday 21 and Thursday 24 October 2013 at the Fundación Ramón Areces.

Europeans have to confront the simple, inescapable fact that they still live in a globalising world which is increasingly dominated by the pressures from the East and West, namely China and the US. This week’s sessions will investigate the issues raised by changing power relationships and the effects on Europe. Of course, Western Europe and the US have traditionally been close allies but significant differences began to emerge in the 1990s and the rift has continued to enlarge. Participants will discuss the issues surrounding this, and consider the likely future developments. The final day and a half will look at China’s and India’s rapid pace of economic growth and the potential opportunities and risks for the global economy, together with some of their implications, and will further consider the effect of the global financial crisis on economic policy thinking and on the regulatory environment in the financial services sector.
