The second Masterclass, Wellbeing and a New Health Policy Agenda, took place in Madrid between Tuesday 18 and Friday 21 June 2013 at the Fundación Ramón Areces.
As demands on the health and social care sector continue to grow, as new technology continues to pressurise expenditure and as health and social care become ever more a political concern, there is an increasing awareness that new policy initiatives are required, both to contain costs and to promote health and quality of care. This Masterclass draws on current research undertaken and policy proposals suggested by LSE faculty which are helping to set this policy agenda.
There are essentially three components to this Masterclass. The first looks at the relationship between health and wellbeing and the role of the state in promoting and rewarding healthy lifestyles (Dolan, Le Grand). The second part looks at the increasing role of competition within the health care sector under fixed prices, how this leads to improvements in quality, and how it is measured and assessed (McGuire, Papanicolas). The final part looks at the movement towards integration of health and social care, the increasing importance of social care for health in the elderly population and the expenditure impact (Fernandez).
