Video transcript

Hello, I’m Julius Sen from the London School of Economics and I’m the academic coordinator for our Economics for Foreign Policy programme for the Foreign Office. As you know, this programme is in 2 parts: Level 1 and Level 2. You would have been referred to this website after completing Level 1 and because you are thinking of taking Level 2. And the purpose of this refresher programme is to help bring your knowledge up to speed so that you can easily take on the workload of the Level 2 programme. Level 2 is a module a little bit on the basis of Level 1 in that it has three components: microeconomics, macroeconomics and international political economy. And we understand that to arrive at the level we require, you may have to refresh your knowledge. To this end we have attached a quiz which you can access at the link below. It contains 20 questions, six of which cover microeconomics, seven of which cover macro and the remaining seven of which cover international political economy.

The purpose of the quiz is not to fault you or to assess you; it’s to help you arrive at your own assessment of what further study you need to undertake to reach the level we need. The results of the quiz will of course be confidential and private to you and we are not interested in the mark you have received. You will notice when you run through the questions, which we hope you will answer straight away without really thinking or referring to any other source, that they are quite technical and complex, particularly in the economics sphere, and you may indeed have forgotten what the issues and concepts are. Depending on the score you achieve, you will be referred to a couple of options. The first of which accepts that you have retained or understand quite a bit but would like to refresh your knowledge and bring you up to speed. And the second of which recognises that you may have forgotten a lot of the stuff or you are out of touch and so it needs to rebuild your knowledge more or less from the bottom up.

The purpose of this process is to give you the references, the readings, the material, the articles, etc. which will help you in arriving at a higher level of knowledge. And we have given of course sufficient time for you to do this before coming to Level 2.

Please note that these courses are for FCO employees only.
