Borja Unceta is a lawyer specialising in economics. He took this programme as part of his gap year.
Week one:
'This is a great chance for me to move my career further into economics – LSE is one of the main institutions for economics in the world. It is incredible to be here.
'I'm most excited about the public lectures. It is incredible what kind of people LSE can bring to speak here. Today we had a magnificent lesson with Professor Michael Cox, about the relationship between the EEBB and the EU. It's about more than studying though. I'm enjoying LSE's knowledge infrastructure, the library is gorgeous. And my first few days in a such a multicultural city have been fantastic.'
Week ten:
'We've had close contact with the teaching staff of LSE. We go to lectures and gain some basic knowledge, and then go into depth in the private seminars. I've enjoyed these seminars most – the academics were highly prepared and gave us insights from their own expertise. They made us think about the different reasons for policies and events. They pressed us hard and got us to think and argue from different angles in ways we would not have done otherwise.
'Our trip to the US was great – we got a glimpse into what Harvard is like and again we got some really interesting private seminars with the university professors.
'We've covered a wide range of subjects, some of which I haven't encountered before. The area I'm most keen on is IR and everything to do with comparative political economy. I appreciate the general picture of the global and European political economy that the course has given me.
'The social life has been great. I've made good friends with the students and we've had a lot of fun with the teaching staff too. We've appreciated the very friendly atmosphere here at LSE.'
Marta Areitio, a former public affairs consultant in Brussels, joined the programme to improve her CV.
Week one:
'It was an opportunity to come to one of the best universities for politics and economics. Basque universities are quite different, and the first few days have helped me get to know the UK educational system. I'm enjoying experiencing all the different cultures, all the events that are going on at LSE and the quality of the speakers.'
Week ten:
'I've enjoyed the seminars most. Having one teacher for only eight of us is an incredible opportunity – it lets us get deeper into the subject and that's been really nice. International Relations was my favourite subject, and the EU courses too.
'The social life here has been amazing and our group all get on really well. London is a great place to socialise – there are people here from all over the world and lots of places to meet LSE students, from lectures to bars. The US trip was also really interesting and the teachers there were good too.
'I improved my English, which is very important nowadays. I learned skills like how to approach and analyse new topics. I also learned a lot about European integration, which is essential for my career. It's been a great programme.'
