FCO

Economics for Foreign Policy One: an ongoing five-day programme for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office held at locations across the world

'Where else in the Foreign Office would I get the opportunity to get a strong understanding of why the economic crisis took place; what is driving global prosperity; an overview of micro and macroeconomics and what the fuss is all about regarding globalisation, all in five days with two LSE leading economists leading the debate? I feel very privileged to have had the opportunity to spend five full days receiving informative and innovative lectures from some of the most leading economists in the world. Terms such as the economic crisis; the Bretton Woods institutions; competitiveness; supply and demand and economic growth were just phrases before I took part in the course. Now I feel that I have a strong understanding of what these concepts mean; why they are so important to foreign policy and how they impact on my work.

'The lecturers were very dynamic, provided excellent examples to back up the theory and encouraged as much interaction as possible. And simple but thought-provoking games were added into the mix to put the theory into practice. I really do believe that the course is an excellent investment for all Policy Officers – especially at a time when the global economic situation is a key foreign policy priority and when the FCO has a shortage of economic experts. I also appreciated the fact that we got some really solid reading references that we can take away with us when we are back in the office.'

Peter Bainbridge, First Secretary South America Regional Climate Change Advisor, Brasilia
