Introduction to the Social Sciences: Years 10-12

This one-day event, repeated through the year, introduces Year 10-12 students to the content and language of the social sciences.

When and where does the scheme run?

The Introduction days are held on the LSE campus. 

The following dates are currently available for 2017/18:

All sessions run from 10:30am-3:30pm

March 2018

What activities are included?

The day includes:

1. A short introduction to LSE
2. At least one academic session on a social science topic. Previous topics have been: ‘The happiness of economics’, an introduction to econometrics, exploring why the British drink tea’. If there is a particular subject interest, we ask schools to let us know in advance and will try to accommodate this where possible.
3. Student panel Q&A and student led games and competitions
4. Campus tour

Are there any costs involved?

There is no charge for the scheme, but schools need to arrange and pay for transport to / from the LSE campus. Lunch is provided.

How many school staff should accompany the pupils?

We ask that one or more members of staff accompany your group if selected to attend the scheme. We will confirm details as to numbers of staff required when we confirm the number of places but roughly one per group of 10-15 students.

What training do LSE staff receive?

All staff and students involved in the sessions receive appropriate training before the event. Staff or students working directly and regularly with young people on activities receive specific training on working with children, in line with LSE’s Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy. They also undergo an appropriate level Disclosure and Barring Service check.
