We are delighted to offer accommodation at the Graca Machel Hall for participants who are seeking accommodation in Cape Town. Please note, however, that there is no requirement for LSE-UCT July School participants to stay in this hall of residence, and places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Previous participants have also used the Fritz Hotel and The Garden Centre Apartments, further information about these two options is listed below, but please note that these are not owned by UCT and participants will need to make booking directly with these accommodations.

Graca Machel Hall

The majority of previous participants on the LSE-UCT July School have opted to book accommodation in UCT’s secure and modern residence on UCT’s lower campus, a ten minute walk or short campus bus ride from the LSE-UCT July School teaching buildings. A booking and payment form will be provided to all registered participants once they have paid their tuition fees to confirm their place on the programme. A limited number of rooms have been allocated to the July School, including some with disabled access, and accommodation can be booked at discounted rates for a limited period. Any bookings made after the advertised date will be subject to availability and may be at higher rates.

Accommodation is in single or twin rooms, within single-sex flats shared by up to eight people. Each flat has a shared bathroom and kitchenette/ lounge/study area. There are no self-catering facilities in the residence, but a number of catering options are available on and near the UCT campus. Wifi internet is available in all rooms.

Fritz Hotel

Fritz Hotel is located two minutes walk from UCT's Hiddingh Campus (from where students can take UCT's free Jammie Shuttle to/from the campus) and the very popular Kloof Street (populated with restaurants and shops) and five minutes’ walk from Long Street (especially popular for nightlife). As the Fritz Hotel is small with a limited number of rooms, participants who wish to stay here are recommended to book early.

This is small hotel/bed and breakfast close to UCT's Hiddingh campus which offers participants on the LSE-UCT July School a discount of 20%, reducing the cost of rooms to between R500 to R600 (approximately £30 - £36) per night for a single or double room. Participants simply need to quote the LSE UCT School Programme when booking in order to obtain the discounted rate.

The Garden Centre Apartments

The Garden Centre Apartments currently offers 16 self-catering studio apartments for the duration of the July School. The cost of these apartments is usually R650 (approximately £39) per night. There is no special LSE-UCT July School discount, but participants may qualify for a discount rate given the length of their stays - participants should discuss this directly with the Garden Centre Apartments when making any bookings.

This accommodation is located above the Gardens Shopping Centre offering city or mountain views in the heart of Cape Town, with everything close at hand. The location is about ten minutes' walk from Hiddingh Campus (from where students can take UCT's free Jammie Shuttle to/from the campus).

Participants are advised to consider transport options, personal security and facilities for personal study when choosing accommodation. In addition to the Jammie Shuttle, parking can also be arranged on campus if necessary. Please email us with any parking requirements in advance of the July School. Please also note that accommodation is not included in the LSE-UCT July School tuition fee, and all costs are approximate, with currency conversions calculated on 19 January 2017.
