Abstract

Data prediction competitions allow researchers and companies to post their data and have it scrutinised by the world’s best data scientists. Competitions are

particularly effective because there are countless methods that can be applied to solve any data problem and it is impossible to know at the outset which technique will be most effective. By exposing the problem to a wide audience, competitions can very quickly reach the frontier of what is possible from a given dataset. In its first six months,

Kaggle, an online platform for data modelling competitions, has outperformed the betting markets and advanced the state of the art in HIV research and chess ratings.
