Please see below for information about the courses we are offering in the Department of Sociology in the 2016-17 academic year. Students choose their courses using LSE for You (LFY), LSE's web-based self-service student administration system, once they have completed their admissions paperwork (undergraduates) or arrived and registered at LSE (postgraduates).
Core courses and optional courses: each programme offers certain courses which are compulsory for students on that programme, called core courses (see the Graduate and Undergraduate programme pages for information about the programmes we offer). You will be automatically enrolled for these. For optional courses, you will need to apply for a place in any class you wish to join using LSE for You and submit a reason for wanting to join that class. The course convenor will then decide who to accept (but see below).
CAPPED courses: Numbers are limited to avoid overcrowding, so please note it may not be possible for everyone who applies to get a place on these courses. Some courses which are listed as options for your programme of study may be compulsory core courses for other programmes. If they are capped they may only be able to offer a few places for students wishing to take them as optional courses, depending on how many people are taking them as core courses.
We hope that you will be able to choose the options you are most interested in but we cannot guarantee that everyone will get their first choices. If you are not sure which options to choose you should talk to your academic advisor after you arrive at LSE.
1/2 UNIT: This means the course runs for one term only (either Michaelmas Term, in the autumn, or Lent Term, in the spring).
