Does the LSE have funding available for MPhil/PhD students and if so, how do I apply?

There is some funding available but it is highly competitive and not enough to cover your expenses for the entire programme. You will need to secure adequate funding elsewhere. Have a look at the 'Opportunities for funding document' on our website. Please note that some funding organisations have application deadlines early in the year so dates should be checked as soon as possible.

What is the deadline for applications to start the MPhil/PhD programme in the next academic year?

There is no set deadline for applications however, you are advised to apply as early as possible in the previous academic year as competition is high and we have limited availability of appropriate supervisors.

What is the admission criteria for the MPhil/PhD programme?

Applicants, normally, possess a high level of pass in an appropriate master's degree, together with at least an upper second class honours degree in an appropriate subject from a UK university or its equivalent elsewhere. Graduates from the Department's own master's degrees much have achieved an average mark of 65% or better (pass mark, 50%) to be eligible for admission to the corresponding doctoral programme.

Should I seek comment on my research proposal before completing my application?

It can be very useful to seek comment on your proposal before completing your application. You can consult the 'Who's Who' section on the Social Psychology website to find out which of our academics would be most appropriate for your research.

Is it possible to undertake a pure 'PhD' programme in the Department rather than MPhil/PhD?

We only have one research degree programme which is MPhil/PhD. All students commence MPhil studies and after 18 months, for full-time students, they upgrade to PhD student status. The MPhil is a qualification in its own right and is for students who for any reason fail to upgrade to the PhD programme.

Does the MPhil/PhD programme cover all areas of Social Psychology?

The MPhil/PhD programme is split into 4 areas as follows:
1) Health, Community and Development;|
2) Organisational and Social Psychology|;
3) Social and Public Communication|;
4) Social and Cultural Psychology|

Where can I order a graduate prospectus?

The prospectus is available online via the Graduate Admissions website. To request a copy of the prospectus by email please complete the electronic form. A prospectus will be despatched to you within two working days. Please allow normal delivery times from central London.

Should I send application materials straight to the Department or unit?

Please send your application materials directly to Graduate Admissions. All information regarding the application process is published in the Graduate Prospectus.

Can I apply online to a programme?

Yes, you can submit your application electronically. To apply please visit the Apply Online section of the LSE Graduate Admissions website.

How much will the degree cost me and how much does it cost to live in London?

For detailed information please visit the What it will cost pages on the LSE website. On the website you will find a guide to Graduate Tuition Fees and a rough estimate of living costs in London.

Where can I find accommodation in London?

For detailed information please visit the Accommodation Office website for LSE students in London. On their website you can apply directly for accommodation in a student hall of residence. They can also offer valuable advice on renting privately.

How long does it the decision process take after I submit my application?

For a detailed outline on the decision process please refer to Graduate Admissions.
