The lecture ‘Avoiding the Avoidable: Comparative Approaches to Patient Safety’ will be delivered by Sir Liam Donaldson, the former Chief Medical Officer and patient safety expert. This lecture will consider the latest international thinking on approaches to patient safety and the future challenges and opportunities this presents for health care leaders. Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman Rob Behrens will then deliver a brief response. This event will be chaired by Dr Simon Bastow.

Sir Liam Donaldson is a global leader in public health and health care quality and safety. He is currently Chair in Public Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. From 1998 to June 2010, Sir Liam was the Chief Medical Officer for England and the United Kingdom's Chief Medical Adviser. Over his 12 years in post he produced a series of reports and policy initiatives that helped shape public health, NHS care and clinical practice. These included smoke-free public places, regulated stem cell research and the establishment of a health protection service. Internationally, Sir Liam has served as member and Vice-Chairman of the World Health Organization's Executive Board and led the World Alliance for Patient Safety. He is currently the World Health Organization Director-General's envoy on patient safety and chairs the International Monitoring Board on polio eradication.

Rob Behrens CBE was appointed as Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman and Chair of the organisation on 6 April 2017. He has considerable experience of investigating allegations of public service failure and, as a result, bringing redress to service users. His previous roles include Complaints Commissioner at the Bar Standards Board and Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education (Office of the Independent Adjudicator) in England and Wales. Rob transformed the Office of the Independent Adjudicator into an outstanding ombudsman service by focusing on promoting best practice and providing a more efficient and effective service to complainants. Following this he became Visiting Professor at the University College London Institute for Education and also Chair of the European Network of Ombudsmen in Higher Education. Rob was made a CBE for ‘services to higher education’ in the New Year’s Honours List, December 2015.
