After eight years of fiscal restraint, where should the state go next and what does that mean for the public finances?

In her first talk at LSE, The Rt Hon. Liz Truss will argue that to be effective at delivering the public good, government should adapt to reflect the modern age, and boost growth through economic liberalisation and taking on vested interests.

Meet our speakers and chair

Liz Truss (@trussliz) is Chief Secretary to the Treasury and keeper of the public finances. An economist by background, she was elected to Parliament in 2010, served as Environment Secretary under David Cameron, and then as Justice Secretary. Since joining HM Treasury, she has argued that to succeed, Britain needs to turbocharge the free market for the digital age and give people more power over their own lives.

Tim Besley is School Professor of Economics of Political Science and W. Arthur Lewis Professor of Development Economics in the Department of Economics at LSE.  He is also a member of the National Infrastructure Commission and, for 2018, is President of the Econometric Society.
