Availability

This course is compulsory on the MSc in Social Policy and Development. This course is not available as an outside option.

Course content

The 10,000 word dissertation enables students to analyse in greater depth an issue relevant to social policy and development from a government-centred perspective.

 

Teaching

3 hours of lectures in the MT. 3 hours of lectures in the LT.

 

There will be two Dissertation Clinics held during the MT and LT Reading Weeks.  Each Dissertation Clinic will be 3 hours long.  Academic advisors will provide regular supervision and feedback throughout the three terms (MT, LT, and ST). 

Formative coursework

The area of study is defined by the student, in consultation with their academic advisor. An outline proposal is developed on SA472 and submitted via Moodle. The proposal is discussed with the academic adviser early in the Lent Term. Guidance is provided in dissertation writing and research skills. 

Assessment

Dissertation (100%, 10000 words).

Dissertations should be no more than 10,000 words in length (100% of this unit), excluding the bibliography.
