Dr Riccardo Crescenzi's research has been focused on three main areas. First, the investigation of the link between innovation and regional economic growth as shaped by local innovation systems and knowledge spillovers. Second, the comparative analysis between the European Union and the United States in order to highlight the differences in the territorial determinants of innovative performance. And third, the analysis of the structure and impact of EU regional policy.

He has published in international journals, such as Growth and Change, Regional Studies, The Journal of Economic Geography and The World Economy.
