Firstly, I have published on the geopolitics and geo-economics of Southeast Asia and follow/undertake research on regional developments, particularly relations with major extra-regional powers. The US pivot and China's reaction to it have had a major impact on the region, disturbing previous relationships and threatening stability - matters which I concentrate on. Secondly, I am also an expert on the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), being especially well-versed on its community-building efforts, the opportunities and challenges. As chairman of the ASEAN-Business Advisory Council (ABAC), Malaysia and prospective chairman of ABAC for the whole of ASEAN, I am practically involved in the challenges of setting up the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). Finally, I have been a close observer of Malaysian politics, in my adult life, for almost 40 years. My understanding and contacts in the political life of the country are excellent.
