I am an expert on modern history of international relations, the Cold War, and the political and intellectual history of the Soviet Union-Russia. The list of publications include Inside the Kremlin’s Cold War: From Stalin to Khrushchev with C. Pleshakov (Harvard University Press, 1996), A Failed Empire: the Soviet Union in the Cold War from Stalin to Gorbachev (University of North Carolina Press, 2007), and Zhivago’s Children: The Last Russian Intelligentsia (Belknap Press, 2009).

I am a Fellow at the National Security Archive at the University of George Washington and the Cold War International History Project at the Wilson Center for International Scholars. In 1995-98 I was one of the principal consultants of the CNN 24-part series “Cold War.”

In 2007-2012 was director of the Carnegie Corporation’s International Summer School Project for Social Sciences and Humanities for the young educators of the post-Soviet space.

Currently I am finishing a book on the life and works of Dmitry Likhachev, and starts a new project “1991. Russia destroys the Soviet Union.”
