Research summary > [Click to expand]

My research theorizes the under-theorized and emerging field of cultural property and heritage law. This field is composed of international conventions, national legislation, private law judgments in national courts, and disputes arising between museums, art dealers, purchasers, and auction houses. It spans the areas of public and private international law, public and private domestic law, museology, archaeology, and ethics: in short, it is a truly global and transnational area of scholarship and practice. Many of the commentaries in this field are limited to explanations of new conventions and cases, or prescriptive calls for regulation. There is less assessment and theorization of the values and social (and economic) structures that determine the proliferation of instruments and disputes in the field.

My work begins to create an infrastructure of interpretive rather than descriptive scholarship. I am regularly invited to present my work nationally and internationally on this basis. I have also developed and teach the first course in cultural property and heritage law offered in the LSE LLM, and the only course in this topic being offered at the University of London. I am part of a network of legal scholars in this area, spanning the UK, the US and the EU.
