Professor Steinberg's primary area of research is in combinatorial auctions and spectrum auctions. He is Editor-in-Chief on the book Combinatorial Auctions (co-edited with P. Cramton and Y. Shoham), M.I.T. Press, 2006.

He has advised the US Federal Communications Commission on the design of spectrum auctions. Recently, he co-organised (with G. Myers of Ofcom) the workshop, ‘Combinatorial Auctions for Spectrum: State of the Art’, held at the London School of Economics in September 2013. Professor Steinberg has also advised the National Audit Office on spectrum auction design.
