Research summary > [Click to expand]

My research interests, broadly defined, lay in the fields of political economics, positive political theory and public policy evaluation and design. I am particularly interested in the political economy of redistribution and distributive politics, electoral behaviour and participation (turnout), formal analysis of electoral competition, party and electoral systems.

The focus of my work is on the linkages between economic and political inequality, the conditions for political and economic development and the design of political institutions (e.g. electoral rule reform). In particular, I explore the impact of unemployment, economic malaise and redistributive spending on the structure of the party-system, the distribution of electoral and political power as well as the voting behaviour of the unemployed. I am also interested in the opportunistic motivations of dominant parties to use redistribution for electoral purposes, machine politics and political clientelism.

A significant part of my current research is devoted in the study of electoral rule design and the evaluation of the trade-off between representativeness and polarisation. More recently, I have also been working on the economics and politics of gender and the link between women's economic and political empowerment in developing countries.
