Dr Iskander's work focuses on the politics, society and law of the Middle East, with particular reference to Egypt. Her research interests include Arabic media, identity politics, minorities in the Middle East, and the role of religion in politics, conflict and media. She has previously worked on Coptic media and identity. Her current research is an analysis of Arabic media discourses concerning Iran and particularly Iran as a potential source of conflict for the Middle East region. The project builds on her research into media representations of sectarian conflict and her policy work on Iran and Middle East security.
