Dr Green is primarily concerned with the political demography of ethnicity and nationalism in the modern world, with a specific focus on Sub-Saharan Africa. In particular he is interested in the causes and consequences of urbanization, the origins of ethnic diversity and ethnic identity change, the relationship between nationalism and economic development and the political economy of rural patronage. He has carried out field work in Uganda, Tanzania and Botswana.
