Claire Mercer's research has been concerned with the consequences of the pursuit of ‘development’ in sub-Saharan Africa. Over the last two decades she has undertaken research in Tanzania and, more recently, Cameroon, and has published on the changing character and work of associational life (NGOs, hometown associations), partnerships in development, and the geographies of the African diaspora. She is currently working on new research on the middle classes, domestic architecture and suburban space in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
