1) The evolution of the networks of aides to British prime ministers from 1868 to the present. The focus is on how a system with only two aides for prime minister Disraeli changed to one of many hundreds for prime minister Blair.

2) The relationship between central and local government, focussing on the increase in centralisation and the erosion of local government, driven by the national government's concerns about local expenditure, taxation, policy and service delivery.

3) Leadership in local government, focussing on the debates about the structure of political executives in local authorities.
