Fear of openly confronting the problem of politics can get in the way of achieving economic development goals. To help address this, the Development Research Group of the World Bank has prepared a report synthesising the vanguard of economics research on the functioning of political markets to understand its implications. This report, Making Politics Work for Development, will be presented by its lead author Stuti Khemani and discussed by Ali Cheema and Gerard Padró i Miquel. The report analyses how politics has profound consequences for economic development in both poor and rich countries.
Stuti Khemani is a Senior Economist in the Development Research Group of the World Bank.
Ali Cheema is Lead Academic for IGC Pakistan and board member at the Center of Economic Research in Pakistan (CERP).
Gerard Padró is a Research Programme Director for the IGC’s State research programme and Professor of Economics at LSE.
Jonathan Leape is the Executive Director of the IGC and an Associate Professor of Economics at the LSE.
The International Growth Centre (@The_IGC) aims to promote sustainable growth in developing countries by providing demand-led policy advice based on frontier research.
