Consolidation and consumers

LSE Media Policy Project public lecture

Date: Wednesday 7 October 2015
Time: 6.30-8pm
Venue: Hong Kong Theatre, Clement House
Speaker: Sharon White
Chair: Dr Damian Tambini

Sharon White, Chief Executive of Ofcom, will deliver a speech discussing the impact of consolidation on consumers in the communications markets, and the regulation of oligopolies. Services like broadband and mobile are now essential to the functioning of the economy, to the way people work and live their lives. At a time of enormous change in the telecoms sector, Ms White will explore whether regulators have the right tools to ensure that market structures continue to deliver the best results for consumers.

Sharon White (@Ofcom) joined Ofcom as Chief Executive in March 2015. Before Ofcom, Sharon had a long career in the civil service. She was Second Permanent Secretary at the Treasury, responsible for overseeing the public finances. Before that she held Board-level positions at the Ministry of Justice and the Department for International Development. Sharon has worked as a civil service adviser at the Prime Minister's Policy Unit and in Washington DC as a senior economist at the World Bank. She is a trained economist and studied at Cambridge University and University College London.

Damian Tambini (@damiantambini) is an Associate Professor in LSE's Department of Media and Communications and Director of the LSE Media Policy Project.
