Prospects for Economic Reform in Europe: what role for Britain?

European Institute 'Britain in Europe: the next chapter' public debate

Date: Wednesday 17 June 2015
Time: 7.30pm
Venue: Wolfson Theatre, New Academic Building
Speaker: Andy Bagnall, Professor Ali El-Agraa, John Peet, Mujtaba Rahman

Structural reform of the EU's sclerotic economies is at the top of national policy agendas but the political and electoral obstacles are formidable. Is the flexible, liberal approach to economics long championed by Britain the key to boosting the EU's competitiveness and its economic performance? How can Britain improve the effectiveness of its economic advocacy in the EU? A panel of economics experts will explore the options.

Andy Bagnall (@askbagnall) is responsible for co-ordinating the CBI’s cross-cutting campaigns on issues ranging from the UK’s relationship with the European Union to raising awareness of the contribution the business community makes to delivering prosperity for the wider society.

Ali M. El-Agraa is Emeritus Professor of International Economic Integration at Fukuoka University, Japan. During his career Ali has acted as General Consultant for the Anglo-Japanese Economic Institute, Senior International Consultant for the United Nations and Member of the Committee of the International Economics Study Group, sponsored by the UK Economic and Social Research Council. He has held visiting professorships across the world, in the UK, China, US, Japan and Thailand. Ali was with the University of Leeds during 1971–92 where he was a senior lecturer and a member of both its Senate and Council.

John Peet has been Europe Editor at The Economist since September 2003, responsible for coverage of the European Union, Russia, Turkey, the Caucasus and the Balkans. Earlier positions at The Economist, which he joined in 1986, have included Britain correspondent, Washington, DC, correspondent, Executive Editor, Brussels (EU) correspondent and Executive Editor.

Mujtaba Rahman is Practice Head for Europe at Eurasia Group. He focuses on European political economy. In addition, Mujtaba has primary responsibility for all aspects of EU/eurozone coverage, as well as leading country coverage on Greece, Cyprus, and the UK.

The LSE European Institute (@LSEEI) was established in 1991 as a dedicated centre for the interdisciplinary study of processes of integration and fragmentation within Europe. In the most recent national Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014) the Institute was ranked first for research in its sector. The LSE European Institute has been a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence since 2009.
