Zia Haider Rahman, whose debut novel In The Light Of What We Know was described by The Guardian “as an exploration of the post-9/11 world that is both personal and political, epic and intensely moving”, talks to David Lewis about its themes, including identity, the workings of the global development industry, and the place of Bangladesh in the world.
Zia Haider Rahman (@ziahaiderrahman) was born in rural Bangladesh and was educated at Balliol College, Oxford, and at Cambridge, Munich, and Yale Universities. He has worked as an investment banker on Wall Street and as an international human-rights lawyer.
David Lewis is Professor of Social Policy and Development and Head of the Department of Social Policy at LSE. He is author of Bangladesh: Politics, Economy and Civil Society and co-editor of Popular Representations of Development: Insights from Novels, Films, Television, and Social Media.
The Department of Social Policy (@LSESocialPolicy) is the longest established in the UK and offers outstanding teaching based on the highest quality empirical research in the field.
This event forms part of the LSE Space for Thought Literary Festival 2015, taking place from Monday 23 - Saturday 28 February 2015, with the theme 'Foundations'.

All events in the Festival are free to attend and open to all.
Update, Wednesday 11 February: All tickets for this event have now been allocated. There will be a returns queue in operation on the night, and any seats left empty by ticketholders will be filled by those waiting in the returns queue shortly before the start of the event. Based on previous Festivals, those waiting in the returns queue have a good chance of being admitted, although entry is not guaranteed.

For delegates who wish to obtain a CPD Certificate of Attendance, it is the responsibility of delegates to register their details with a LSE steward at the end of the event and as of 1 September 2014 a certificate will be sent within 28 days of the date of the event attended by the CPD Certification Service. If a delegate fails to register their details at the event, it will not prove possible to issue a certificate.
