Everyone admits that there is no fact of the matter about aesthetic judgements. Nonetheless, constantly referring to artistic taste as 'relative' limits the power of art to change us.
Guy Dammann is the music critic of the Times Literary Supplement, and a critic and commentator for the Guardian.
