Poetry and Drama Evening

LSE Language Centre event

Date:  Wednesday 16 February 2011
Time: 7pm
Venue:  Three Tuns Underground Bar

In 1922 T S Eliot’s draft, after much editing by his friend Ezra Pound was published as The Waste Land – the key poetic text of the century, capturing the mood of the post First World War period. The poem both evokes a virtual, timeless ‘unreal city’ and is very much rooted in the 1920s London where Eliot, like many an LSE graduate since, spent his early career working in banking. The poem is multilingual, dipping by turns into classic French, Italian, Latin and Greek literature and ending by quoting in Sanskrit from the Indian Upanishads.

In the collaborative spirit of Eliot’s The Waste Land, students and LSE staff were invited to submit their contributions to a collective poem, Crossing Borders: London: 2011, reflecting the multicultural ambiance and character of both LSE and 21st century London. The competition for contributions, open from December 2010, will, following editing together of the entries, culminate in an evening of poetry and drama on the theme Crossing Borders: London 2011.

The event, with complimentary drinks, is hosted by the LSE Language Centre, Student Poetry Society and the MUSE Journal.

The finished collective poem is now online: Crossing Borders

This event is free and open to all with no ticket required. Entry is on a first come, first served basis. For more information, contact Dr Angus Wrenn (A.J.Wrenn@lse.ac.uk) and Dr Olga Sobolev (O.Sobolev@lse.ac.uk).
