LSE Literary Festival film screening and discussion, in association with the Embassy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela
Date: Wednesday 16 February 2011
Time: 6-8pm
Venue: Wolfson Theatre, New Academic Building
Speakers: Grace Livingstone, Alvaro Sanchez
For the young narrator of Postcards from Leningrad, being born into a socialist uprising in 1960s Venezuela wasn't easy. She and her cousin Teo have learned how to live a clandestine life, making an ongoing game out of survival, with everything from code names and creative disguises to making themselves invisible and devising fantastic escape plans. A visual collage with playful animation and nostalgic footage of revolutionary youth, the film injects both humour and pathos into a story where wild fantasies, foggy memories, madness, white lies, and grief all mix seamlessly in a child's reality. Nominated by Venezuela for the 2008 Oscars and for Spain's 2008 Goyas.
The film will be shown in Spanish, with English subtitles.
The screening will be followed by a discussion of the film’s themes, including Q&A, with Grace Livingstone and Alvaro Sanchez.
Grace Livingstone is a journalist specializing in Latin American affairs. She was a reporter for The Guardian in Venezuela and has also worked for the BBC World Service, The Observer, The Statesman and The Tablet.
